Mendeleev.me – Chemistry Fun without the Mess

Mendeleev.me

Learning chemistry is no fun unless you can see it in action. We all have to take this class as some point or another, so why not make it more interesting with an app? For most of you adults out there, you may not be in need of the app, but if you know of a student who is struggling or just loves chemistry enough to make it a hobby, then Mendeleev.me is the app to check out.

So, what does Mendeleev.me have that makes it such a great educational tool? To start, it contains information for each and every chemical element that’s concise and complete. You basically have a digital encyclopedia of the periodic table at your fingertips when you use Mendeleev.  Laid out in an easy to use format, users can quickly search for and learn about each element. Then, from there, they can see what types of reactions or combinations can be created with other elements.

If you head over to the virtual laboratory, you can actually carry out various experiments, mixing and measuring to your heart’s content, without any fear of damaging anything. Learning through experience enhances the classroom content in ways that cannot be measured.

What’s also neat about Mendeleev is that it supports five different languages: English, German, Romanian, Russian and French.

I’ve been touting the app as a great educational tool for students, but it’s just as useful for educators, too. Teachers can look up elements and download PDFs of each to use for classroom materials. They can even perform experiments of their own to design a classroom project. Along with this, there is a presentation gallery and movie clips and a ClassKit that ties it all together that can be used to enhance any classroom experience.

The app itself also supports 3D graphic and touch screen controls, so you easily use a touch pad or screen to view atomic makeup of each element and compound and move the graphics around to completely show how each element fits together to produce the final product. These animations can also be turned off if you don’t need them, which is a nice power saving feature.

There are so many neat features and functions available in Mendeleev.me that it’s hard to find anything wrong with it. I would love to be able to Save some of my favorite experiments, so I don’t have to remember what I did to produce desired results. It would be really cool to be able to create a library of saved experiments so you could bring them up again or even copy them and make small tweaks.

Mendeleev.me is a must app for anyone needing help with chemistry, already loves chemistry and just wants to play around, or anyone who wants a helpful teaching tool to enhance their classroom’s experience. No class should go without it.
