Not many people like math, but for those of you who do, or those of who need to get better at it, you don’t have to read more math books or do more math problems. All you have to do is download Matchy Matics. It’s a fun game based on mathematics that will have you spewing out quick additions, subtractions and more in no time.
The trick behind this app is that it’s a game. What better motivator could you ask for. The game is set up at varying skill levels and is completely there for you to get better. As you complete game levels, you get medals. The beauty of this app is that if you don’t like how you’ve done at a certain level, you are more than welcome to replay it – how’s that for a great learning experience.

The game is free to download, but comes equipped with some in app purchases, which allows you to unlock all the playing levels. The app does a great job of providing a demo game where you can watch the app play, so you can better understand what you need to do to be successful. This is available from the main screen. There’s also a game that you can play whereby you play at your own pace and it does not count against you – kind of like a tutorial.
Once you feel comfortable with how the game is played, you can move on to the various levels. You start at level 0 and work your way up to level 30. When you view the Levels screen, you’ll also see there are medals at the top. This tells you what medals you can earn at each level.
The game board is basically a square of numbered tiles. The app will display a simple calculation above the tiled area and your challenge is to tap on one number and place it over a second number, which will denote the two numbers needed to complete the equation. For instance, if you see ? X ? = 12, you would put a “6” and “2” together, or “3” and “4”. If you choose two numbers that, when multiplied, do not equal “12,” the app will let you know.
The equations will be for Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. So you get good practice with each of the basic arithmetic functions. As you successfully pick pairs of numbers that satisfy the equation, the number tiles will either disappear or turn into a bonus type of tile which will eventually go away. Your aim in the game is to clear the board of all number tiles. Once you do, you will get a total score. There is no time limit and nothing to lose.
It seems you can connect into Game Center to play the app, but it was not clear to me how to do so. I clicked on star I found on the main screen, and all I got was a message stating Game Center was not available, Player is not signed in. Some help on how to sign it would be nice.
