A very high level of the game has you look at one word and then create a new from it, changing one or two letters, using a hint word. The words are stacked one atop the other. The top word is the starting point, the bottom word is the hint, and the middle word is what you will create. As you create words you earn points.
Now, the first few words will be super easy and since this a free app, they keep it ad free only by allowing you to earn extra coins by watching ads, which is a feature I really liked. There are no irritating disruptions and believe me you will need to collect those coins.
The app also lets you know how many letters are changing by providing an icon that looks like a pencil. If you see one, only one letter is changing. If you see two, two letters are changing. It also lets you know how well you are doing by telling you your percentile, which is the percentage of players that you are doing better than.
As you keep playing you will find that the words get harder to guess, which is another reason to have a stockpile of coins, so you can purchase a hint. Ten coins will get you a randomly placed letter, while 20 coins will let you choose which letter/placement to receive a hint for.
The overall layout of the game is cool and clean. Not sure if matters to many, but I like the cooler colors – they have a calming effect and allow you to focus.
The only thing I can suggest to the developer is to make the keys a little wider so they can be easily selected – it may have been just me, but I had to make several corrections and the keys were a little small to see. Given that, the app does allow you to make as many corrections and tries on each step as you need before you decide to use a hint.
The app has background music as well, and I could not figure out how to turn it off because there did not seem to be a Settings screen, so I ended up having to put my volume to zero. It was strange because I have my volume switch set to vibrate only, so I was not sure why the app’s music was audible.
In any case, I really enjoy playing this game. It certainly makes you rack your brain to find the new word, based on a starter word and a clue. It’s almost like doing a crossword puzzle, but without the full puzzle board.
If you are in the market for a new word game, I highly recommend Cerebrate. Celebrate the strength of your brain with Cerebrate!
