Edward Hopper is an app game, created by Riplay, like the popular 1981 arcade game Frogger. The objective of Hopper is to get your five frogs, one by one, from one side of the street to the other, and then across a river to their own side of the pond. Sounds easy enough, except there are obstacles that you must engage and avoid as you cross the street. The farther you go across the street, the vehicles increase in size and speed, varying in number and placement. Once you make it across the street, you must now face a river stacked with lily pads, turtles that emerge and submerge under water, logs that vary in size and move at different rates of speed, and even gators waiting to bite you when you try to get to your comfortable nook by the river bank.
The graphic of this game, along with the music give you an arcade feel, even when using your touch screen and not the nostalgic joystick we all can associate with the classic arcade experience. Hopper does require skill. In addition to maneuvering around dangerous cars, trucks, animals and yes, the river its self can kill you if you land in it, there are time restraints. You must make it across the street and the river to the river’s edge in the allotted time, or you will self-destruct! You must also get all five of your frogs across to the designated areas in order to move on to the next level. The timer is what increases Hopper’s level of difficulty, so you must not take your time when crossing the street, because time is not on your side. The timer adds to the level of fun you can have playing this game.
The death of the frog in Hopper is awesome for all you that enjoy a little gore. Unlike the disappearing frog, followed by a generic “X” in Frogger, Hopper gives you a bloody skull and cross bones, followed by a gnarly squishy sound. So, no, E for everyone.
Hopper is a free app game, and with free apps, they can and often do contain advertisements. Hopper is no exception to that reality; however, this app does not have many ads interrupting your game at play. Hopper does offer an in-app purchasing option, to purchase it advertisement free for just $0.99. Nonetheless, the free option ads are not a real bother, so you can enjoy playing for free.
Hopper is a fun, yet challenging game that requires a degree of skill under timed pressure. You will groan out loud, yelp and cringe at near misses, self-destruction, and truck splattering, but you will have a good time playing this game. Hopper is available on Android through Google Play store.
